TypeDrawing merges art and words

An inexpensive paid app, TypeDrawing has you choosing words with which to draw pictures. The actual word or sentence becomes your drawing brush. Then, you can change colors and use the brush to sketch whatever you would like. This app is kind of hard to explain. Pictures will do it better.

You can choose the text you want to draw with...

...as well as various features of the font(s) the app will use. (Color choices are available as well using the color picker.)

Once you've chosen your brush, you just draw with your finger or a stylus, and your chosen words will draw your picture. As you draw, the program changes the font and size depending on your settings. In the sample below, I imported a photo to use as background to draw on. You can also change background colors, have the brush respond to your drawing speed, and other fun variations.

I could see this being a lot of fun for, say, a poetry project where the words of the poem were used to sketch a picture relating to the words in a fun variation of the classic Wordle. Or students could create political posters where appropriate words are used to sketch out ideas. The true artists out there will be able to do far more than I!

Here's a sample TypeDrawing drawing from the app developers.

This is what the app looks like in the App Store. The normal app request process should be followed to include this app in your teaching. In a volume purchase, the app would cost $1 per user.

  1. I love the Typedrawing of "Love Your Hands." Ask your daughter about chapel this morning. We talked about how our hands can be used to bless others. I am already thinking about ways to use this app in chapel and religion classes.
